February 2, 2018

Thank you to Andrea Nicholas for helping us with our class auction project!

The children have been reading a variety of biographies and recording character traits they
have identified and can support with specific examples from their readings.  As we explore
character traits further, we request that you or another adult relative or friend share a story
about a personal hero (everyday people, relative, or a historical person) and record it.  We
have provided guidelines below and will send hard copies home of this outline and the attach-
ments in your child's homework folder on Monday, February 5th.

Family Hero Stories
Family Everyday Heroes Homework

Who do you admire?  Why or how has this person influenced your life? What specific examples can you identify about how this person inspires you?

To explore these questions, second graders will listen to an adult family member or friend share their story about a personal hero. This story needs to be recorded and will be shared with our class at school.

This person does not need to be someone famous, but should be someone who has influenced your life or who you admire. This might be a mentor, a parent or grandparent, historical hero, or someone else who has influenced your life in some way.

Our hope is that these stories help the children to create a deeper understanding about the characteristics of heroes.   This will support them as they begin to research character traits they personally connect with.

As you explore how to tell your story, here are some questions to consider…
1. What everyday hero do you admire?  This can be a family member, friend, or someone you have known in your lifetime.
2. Why do you admire this person?  (big picture)
3. Include specific examples that illustrate the character of the person.
4. What actions show how this person has impacted yourself and others?
5. How does this person influence or inspire you and why do you consider him/her an everyday hero?

Please plan ahead! We want this to be a special and meaningful experience for second graders.

Before sharing your story:
Schedule a time to share a story.
Plan for a recording device. This can be an iPad or iPhone.

Day of story:
Record the story on your phone or iPad-voice recording only (check out an iPad from school, if needed)
Listen to the recording together and each identify at least 3 character traits and specific examples of these traits. Feel free to use this Character traits list for ideas.  Discuss and compare your ideas. How are they alike and different?
Take a picture of your child and the storyteller on your iPhone or iPad.

After  completing your story:
Email your recording and photo to your classroom teacher
Return the Family Hero Stories form to school

Completed stories, emailed recordings, and Family Hero form are all due on or before Monday, February 12th.  Please email your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

What is happening in math....

We have begun the process of fettering out information from story problems to discover
what language tells us the operation needed to solve the problem. Phrases that have
been discovered in our work are: "How many in all? What is the difference? How many more? What
is the sum?" The children will be investigating story problems and then creating their own
for classmates to solve. You will be able to view their creations on display during our
upcoming conferences on March 1st and 2nd.

Valentine’s Day
Second graders are getting excited about Valentine’s Day!  We are too! We will exchange valentines and
have a simple party on Wednesday, February 14th. If your child wishes to exchange or make
valentines, we request that they have one for every child in the class. Valentines may be exchanged with
members of other classes, but should be delivered before school in order to avoid feelings of exclusion
(unless there is one for each member of that class). Candy treats may also be exchanged, but we ask that
they are small, individually wrapped, and meet our school’s nut free policy. Please try to include
gluten-free treats so that all members of our community can enjoy! Second grade class lists are in your
OES directory and can be helpful in making sure everyone gets a valentine.

Thank You!
Dear Families of Room 25,
I greatly appreciate the outpouring of caring and concern last week as my family and I lost my mom, Florence.  She had a remarkably full life and I feel blessed to have had her as my role model in life. Thank you for the beautiful bouquet (there were lovely daffodils too), card and the generous gift card.  Your children made this transition to school so much easier and I love each and every day that I have the opportunity to spend with them.
 Fondly, Janet
